Atoms, Ions,and Molecules

Constituent particles of matter may take the form of atoms, ions,and molecules. Atom is the smallest
of an element that still has the properties of these elements. Atomicsize is very small, atomic radii
10-8 cm and the radius of the nucleus 10-13 cm.
Elementary particles there are three constituent atoms, namelyelectron (JJ Thomson), protons (Goldstein), and
neutron (James Chadwick). Electrons are negatively charged,positively charged protons, and neutrons
uncharged (neutral). Atom can only capture and release electronsrather than protons
so that if an atom is changed to positive ions does not mean the atom captures
protons, but a release electrons.
