Learning Guide IDENTIFICATION OF ACID BASE

Learning Guide
IDENTIFICATION OF ACID BASE

I. Objectives:
To decide acid and base characteristic
II. Basic Teory
In chemistry, the definition of acid is a compound that releases hydrogen ions when it dissolves on water. Characteristic of acid are it taste sour, are corrosive to metals, conducts electricity, change litmus (a dye extracted from lichens) red, and become less acidic when mixed with bases. Then, base is a substance that, when dissolve in water has the following properties, there are conducts electricity, changes the color of litmus dye from red to blue, tastes bitter and feels slippery, and reacts with an acid to neutralize the base’s properties.

III. Tools and materials:
1. Blue and red litmus paper
2. Petri dish
3. Some fruits ( banana, orange, apple, mango)
4. Bath soap
5. Wash soap
6. Fresh water

IV. Steps
1. Take a little sample of matter which will be tested and put it on Petri dish
2. Mashed the sample
3. Put blue and red litmus paper on the sample
4. Notice the change of litmus paper
5. Analyze the result
6. Compare your analysis with pH scale
7. Based on pH scale, suppose the pH of each sample

V. Data
No. Matter The Change of Litmus Paper Color
Red Blue
1. Orange
2. Apple
3. Banana
4. Mango
5. Fresh water

7. Sunlight (wash soap)

VI. Questions
1. What is acid and based?
2. Base on this practice, what the matter which include acid and based?
3. What the color of litmus if in acid and based?
